11Jan11 RTRS-FXNEWS-Mkt talk swirls of ECB buying Portugal debt.Euro inches up to $1.295 from $1.2933, drawing support from renewed market talk that the ECB was in the market buying Portuguese debt. Spreads for Spanish, Portguese and Irish debt over German bonds also tighten. This is the second day running that the ECB is supporting peripheral euro zone debt, although traders remain sceptical about its impact. Most expect Portugal to seek a bailout sooner than later, given the punishingly high borrowing costs, followed possibly by Spain.
